It’s been a brilliantly ambitious year for gaming, and so voters at the Golden Joystick Awards no doubt had a difficult decision to make when choosing their Ultimate Game of the Year.
However, the great gaming public have spoken and Fortnite has reigned victorious; beating the acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2, which, despite winning the critics choice award, came in at second place.
Third place went to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, during a tense London based award ceremony on Friday November 16, 2018.
Fornite developers and fans will no doubt be delighted by this accolade, but – with so many other phenomenal choices – gamers have been left divided over who the overall winner should have been.

Many gamers were of the opinion that, although Fortnite is enjoyable to play, it cannot be judged in the same category as story-led ‘masterpieces’ such as God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2.
Some criticised the Golden Joystick Awards for being a ‘popularity contest’ rather than a true recognition of great gaming, with some even describing the win as being a ‘sick joke’.
One man opined:
Fortnite is a good concept sure, BUT NOT A GOOD GAME! It is a game focused on Hype and money and that is it!
Red Dead, Spider-Man and God of War are masterpiece material and you neglected that. Games are not Money or Hype… THEY ARE AN EXPERIENCE AND AN ART FORM!
Another declared:
Saying @FortniteGame is the game of the year is like saying Taylor Swift wrote a master class symphony rivaling Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata.
It’s not in the same league, and shouldn’t even be in contention in the first place. Garbage.
Fortnite as game of the year? My IQ has dropped and my faith in humanity has plummeted.

What an absolute joke of a show LOL COD & Fortnite aren't even in the same realm as a game like Red Dead or God of War!

Really? Fortnite? Against God of War? Against Marvel's Spider-Man? Against Red Dead Redemption 2? Really? pic.twitter.com/QBK8wPJicz

However, others have rushed to defend Fortnite’s title, citing its influence and well-earned popularity.
One person argued:
Deserve it? Because it was insanely popular, but that is nothing, Fortnite is amazing because epic games hear the community, and everything they’ve done to the game is thanks to the community, while Overwatch is just a multiplayer game with loveable characters.
Another dismissed the haters as being ‘hipsters’:
I see, one of them hipsters that think it’s cool to hate Fortnite cause it’s very successful and little kids and non-gamers like to play it.
Fortnite gets updated weekly and Epic Games literally put hundreds of millions into their eSports and everything.
People getting pissed at this, meanwhile I'm more mad Call of Duty was even considered.
At least Fortnite has effort put into it.

The awards ceremony, hosted by Danny Wallace, dealt out numerous awards including Best Storytelling (God of War),
Best Competitive Game (Fortnite), PC Game of the Year (Subnautica) and Xbox Game of the Year (Forza Horizon 4).
Would Fortnite have been your first choice? And do you believe the public vote is an accurate marker of excellence in gaming?
