With a God of War movie currently being considered at Sony, one of the biggest questions on the lips of fans everywhere is who should play the iconic Kratos.
It won’t be an easy role to fill – whoever steps into the shoes of the Ghost of Sparta needs to be equal parts terrifying, vengeful, and genuinely sympathetic, because nobody wants to root for an angsty douche for an entire movie.
Sony/SIE Santa Monica StudiosBack in June, director Steven DeKnight revealed he’d been in talks with Sony about bringing God of War to the big screen. It’s his hope that the film be rated R, so as not to shy away from the really gory, awful stuff Kratos gets up to on his quest for vengeance.
The Pacific Rim Uprising director also revealed who would be his top pick to play Kratos in a potential God of War flick: None other than Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista.
Having played Drax the Destroyer, Bautista has experience in playing an absolute tank on an unrelenting warpath to avenge his murdered family, and DeKnight reckons the former wrestler would be a smart fit for the role.
DeKnight explained to ComicBook.com:
Immediately for me: Dave Bautista would be the man. I think he can do anything. You can do drama, real emotion, humour, action. What would I like to see from a movie like that? A bit of a tricky question because there hasn’t really been 100% success of translating a video game to a movie. It’s a very, very tricky process.
It’s important to note that while DeKnight has allegedly spoken to Sony about making a God of War movie, it’s far from a reality at this point and the director was just spitballing casting ideas.
With that said, I sincerely hope that DeKnight and Sony can make an R rated God of War happen, and that Bautista is able to get involved – he really does seem like he’d make a brilliant Kratos.
