It has almost been three years since Idris Elba’s brilliant Detective Chief Inspector John Luther last appeared on our television screens.
Being one of the nation’s favourite TV detectives as he brought something new to the genre, fans have been calling for Luther to return and finally he is!
Wishing us all a very Merry Christmas, the BBC have confirmed that series five will return to BBC One over the Christmas period.
For a sneak peek at series five, you can watch a teaser trailer below:
In a press release announcing their festive programming, the BBC confirmed the news stating that series five will comprise of four parts.
They wrote:
Multi-award-winning crime drama series Luther makes its long-awaited return to BBC One. DCI John Luther, played by Idris Elba, is once more called to immerse himself in the deepest depths of human depravity in a new four-part series written by Neil Cross. Wunmi Mosaku joins as new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday.
We still don’t what exact date Luther will air but at least we know it is coming soon!
Although much of the plot is shrouded in mystery, which is how it should be given this is a detective program, the BBC also released an official synopsis which gives us some clues as to what to expect.
Describing a new threat as ‘a nightmare’ which has risen out of ‘the moonless shadows of London’, Luther is called upon to track down a killer.
It continues:
While the monstrous and seemingly indiscriminate killings become ever more audacious and public, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday played by Wunmi Mosaku are confounded by a complex tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an untouchable corruption.
But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the true face of evil, a reluctant Luther is forced to confront the unburied demons of his own recent past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect and who to sacrifice.
Promising that these events will ‘change Luther forever’, it sounds like the upcoming series will have devastating consequences for the tortured detective.
The trailer certainly showed Luther in trouble as we see him tied to a chair with a bag over his head getting questioned by an apparent abductor.
Asking the man, who turns out to be gangster George Cornelius (Patrick Malahide), ‘what is all this b*llocks’, Luther continues to be asked ‘where is he?’
Not exactly impressed by Luther’s answers, Cornelius then brutally tasers the detective causing him to writhe in pain.
Luther then learns the ‘he’ Cornelius is referring to is his son Alistair who seems to have been kidnapped, pointing a gun to the detective’s head once again asking ‘where is he?’
At the end of the trailer Luther manages to break free, escaping from his bindings, jumping out of the chair grabbing the gun.
But we will have to wait until Christmas to see what happens next!
