If you like flicking through comics, you‘re in for a treat. The artist Andres Colmenares is busy on Instagram delivering some cute and wholesome comics to distract us from whatever is bothering us. The Colombian illustrator‘s comics feature cute animals and various everyday things coming to life and reminding us what is really important.
Working under the nickname wawawiwacomics on Instagram, Andres has won the hearts of his 1.4M followers. This is not the first time Bored Panda has shared his work with its viewers, so when you‘re done with this list of his work, go and check out the previous one.

We got in touch with Andres to catch up, because it's been a while since the last time we spoke. Well, he is really busy, because besides the comics, he also has other projects for this year: “One of them is a graphic novel I'm really excited about. The other project is a secret for now. I hope I can give more details soon on social media!”
The last project that was a great success was a book published by Andrews McMeel Publishing, When Sharks Attack with Kindness. It features the characters from the artist‘s comics, “Shark, Avi, Guy and a big cast of marine creatures being good friends and supportive with each other, talking about stuff that people go through, but with an aquatic setting.”

There are a lot of different characters in these comics and new ones are constantly created, but there are also some reoccurring ones in which the readers become invested. Andres told us that he is trying to have certain characters appear more often, but he says, “this is not so easy for me since my ideas are all over the place. Right now the ones I've used the most are Shark and Avi (the shark and his tie friend) and a human I like to call Guy, he's basically a version of myself but better looking.”

Artists take inspiration from all different sources. Obviously the pandemic really got some people reflecting about it in their art and Andres is no exception; however, he usually avoids talking about the negative things that are currently happening in the world or issues we have to deal with.
He focuses more on other things: “I try to focus more on scenes that people might experience and relate to, but I leave it more open, so they can find different meanings to it. Other times I just do silly comics, since my main goal is to post content that works as a break from all the bad news and negativity you see around.”

Maybe you already noticed, but a lot of these comics have minimal or no text at all, so it really does depend on the person what they will take from it. Let us know in the comments what these comics are telling you, we are curious to hear your interpretations! And of course, don’t forget to upvote the comics that made you smile.

As mentioned, Andres is really working hard and providing us with content not on one, but two Instagram accounts. The one with 1.4M followers is with comics where the text is written in English, but there is another, wawawiwadesign, that has comics in Spanish. According to the artist, these accounts are different, but it‘s not intentional.
He explained to us, “Sometimes I post in both feeds at the same time, other times I believe a comic might not work if I translate it and other days I just forget to post on one of them. I have profiles on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit. Each with a Spanish and an English version, I tend to forget to post on each one of them when I have a new comic.”
