Roger Clark, the award-winning star of Red Dead Redemption 2, has been stressing the importance of single player games like God of War and RDR in a world dominated by battle royales like Fortnite and Apex Legends.
Speaking to BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat, Arthur Morgan himself said he’s a huge fan of single player games, and believes he’ll be working on dedicated story driven experiences “until the day he dies.”
In light of the fact that Red Dead Redemption 2 had one of the biggest opening weekends in the history of entertainment, and that games like Spider-Man and God of War smashed all kinds of sales records for Sony, it seems pretty easy to see that single player is still a big deal.
As Clark said, it became clear after the sales of Rockstar’s digital Western that were was “plenty of room” for all kinds of games.
He explained that Rockstar wanted to tell the best story it could, despite the addition of Red Dead Online, which was clearly included in the game as a response to the massive success of things like Fortnite and GTA Online.
Clark said:
The storytelling potential – every year we see something more and more inspiring and brave – and I for one am a huge fan of single-player. I’m going to be doing it until the day I die. I know it.
While games like Apex Legends and Fortnite continue to do exceedingly well, you only need to take a look at all the big gaming awards from the last year. Both God of War and Red Dead absolutely cleaned up at the Game Awards and the BAFTA Games Awards, with the former taking home the coveted Game of the Year award at both.
God of War director Cory Balrog also told the BBC that there’s space for all kinds of games, and that single-player is “just as relevant” as multiplayer. Hopefully this is a view the AAA publishers continue to share.
