Now this is an episode of Dancing On Ice I’d like to see – where the contestants are on a block of real ice that is under the constant threat of drifting out to sea forever and ever, never to return.

See you later random person from random soap opera, can’t believe you couldn’t figure skate like a professional after only two weeks! Unfortunately though, this is reality and not reality TV, which is sadly something I have to tell myself more than once a day.

And the reality of the situation is that it was a grandma on holiday in Iceland who drifted out to sea, after the block of ice she was on was suddenly swept away by the tide. If you thought the hot weather in February was alarming, the ice in Iceland is literally melting away…

The grandma in question was exploring Iceland’s famous Diamond Beach, near the Jökulsárlon glacier lagoon last month, when her son – the guy who took the photos – persuaded her to pose on a block of ice which looked like a throne.

She wasn’t the only person to do it, a handful of others had posed on the ice beforehand, and they had asked permission. Unfortunately it was Catherine Streng’s grandmother who just happened to be on the throne when a wave came and dislodged the ice, carrying it out to sea in the process.

Catherine said, via Now: Guide to Iceland:

My family has always loved to travel. It doesn’t surprise me that my father and grandmother decided to go to Iceland. I believe they were both interested in the nature and beautiful scenery. My father actually hates the cold, but he says he really likes it there and finds it beautiful. He also loves the clean energy of the country.

Catherine heard of her grandma’s close call via a text from her father, who said:

She ascended the throne after a wave had pulled back and left it briefly exposed on the beach. Then a wave washed in and dislodged the ice throne, rocking it from side to side. When the wave retreated, it lifted the dislodged throne and carried her out with the tide.

After receiving the text, Catherine added:

I laughed out loud at work because that’s just so something that would happen to my family.

Luckily, a licensed boat captain from Florida, called Randy Lacount, was on hand to save the day. Randy didn’t need his boat though, as he just waded into the water and carried Catherine’s grandma back to the shore, while her son looked on and took photos like all good sons do.
