A girlfriend has divided Couple-Twitter over a top she bought her boyfriend to scare off any eyelash batting women on the prowl.
Holly Cockerill purchased the t-shirt – which had apparently been a jokey birthday present – to keep boyfriend Karl Hennan away from the siren call of girls on the pull.
Now, imagining your other half to be an irresistible temptation for feckless singletons is a common enough occurrence, and Holly has explained the gift was intended as more of a laugh than as anything serious.
However, many Twitter users feel Holly has taken things a shade too far in the overprotective girlfriend department, with some even expressing genuine concern for Karl…
Don’t think Karl likes his new top I got him for his birthday x wear it with pride hun x pic.twitter.com/dxUymV8W71

Complete with a picture of Holly posing, the t-shirt bore the following warning:
If your reading this you’ve been looking at my man for too long.
And this is how Id’ be looking at you if I was here. HI I’m Holly, his GIRLFRIEND!
Holly tweeted a picture of Karl wearing the t-shirt, paired with a mock grumpy face, alongside the following caption:
Don’t think Karl likes his new top I got him for his birthday x wear it with pride hun x
Plenty of people found the t-shirt to be hilarious, with one woman even suggesting it was giving her ideas.
However, others were worried about this being a potentially ‘controlling’ and even ‘toxic’ gesture, with some people pointing out how this gift might be viewed differently if the gender roles were reversed.
One person commented:
IDK if this is a joke but if you’re serious you should probably look into some couple’s counselling. Lot of trust issues and controlling behaviour.
Another said:
This ain’t cute. its humiliating, controlling, narcissistic and if this goes on all the time then its also abusive.
How dare he not wear it on the toilet!!!!!!! pic.twitter.com/vdcVmLXIGK

Addressing the controversy via Twitter, Holly explained how this present really was in jest and that she wouldn’t actually make Karl wear it:
People going mad at the fact I got my bf a top with my face on for a joke. If you think for one second I’m going make him wear it then your absolutely f*ckin right lols joke it’ll be in bin after.
Obviously, if your girlfriend or boyfriend is actually forcing you to wear a t-shirt like this when you go for a pint, then I cannot adequately express how fast you should run.

How would you react if your girlfriend bought you this t-shirt? And would you go as far as to wear it on a night out with your mates?
