The free to play battle royale Apex Legends has had an incredible debut week, grabbing an eye watering 25 million players in its first seven days.

VR title Apex Construct has accidentally ridden the crest of this phenomenal wave, as PC Gamer reports that the title – first released on Steam in March 2018 – sold more copies in China last week than it sold in all of 2018.

It’s clearly no coincidence that Apex Construct saw a 4000% increase in visitors to its Steam page the same week Apex Legends launched.

Fast Travel Games communications manager Andreas Juliusson took to Reddit to share this incredible story, and explained that the company expects and is prepared to give refunds to the players who thought that they were buying Apex Legends.

He wrote:

What makes it even weirder is that we sold more units of Apex Construct in China the last seven days than during ALL of 2018 – apparently people are prepared to buy what they think is Apex Legends for $29.99, even thought it’s a free-to-play title… Most likely these units will be refunded, but our books look pretty good at the moment!

Unfortunately, Apex Construct is now drawing a ton of negative user reviews from players who feel like they’ve been scammed into buying a fake game. Obviously, these users have made a mistake that has nothing to do with Fast Travel Games, so it’s a shame to see.

While it probably didn’t help matters that both games have very similar logos, the Steam Community Team is apparently currently looking into what Juliusson calls a “massive misunderstanding.”

If you see a game with Apex in the title on Steam that’s asking you for money, just remember these two simple things; Apex Legends is FREE TO PLAY, and NOT ON STEAM.

Easy.
