Ever since the Nintendo Switch launched, fans have been demanding a port of the excellent Wii U level creator Super Mario Maker. A wonderful game that let players make their own 2D Mario levels and share them online.
During last night’s Nintendo Direct, it was announced that we’d be getting a full sequel instead. Imaginatively titled Super Mario Maker 2, the game looks set to expand on the first game’s already incredibly robust and easy to use level creation tools
The game is set to release on Nintendo Switch in June, and lets you create Mario levels in the style of the NES Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros, and Super Mario 3D World – a new addition for the sequel.
New backgrounds are joined by new enemies and powerups, as the trailer showcased the Lucky Bell item from 3D World that transforms Mario into Cat Mario. We’ll also be able to add slopes to levels, a feature that was oddly missing from the first game.
It’s not currently clear if we’ll be able to use the Switch touchscreen to play like we could on the Wii U version, but there are some nifty new radial menus that look to make level designing with the control sticks a breeze.

With a June release date, we’re bound to get more info on this one pretty soon. Anyone who missed out on the Wii U version (which is probably most people) shouldn’t skimp on this.
