Cyberpunk 2077 Creative Director Sebastian Stępień may have departed CD Projekt RED for Blizzard, but that doesn’t mean work on the upcoming sci-fi RPG is slowing down.
Stockwatch.pl, (via WCCF Tech) recently discovered from Investor Relations Director at CD Projekt RED Karolina Gnaś that the development team is now comprised of over 400 units.
She explained in response to Stępień’s departure:
His departure does not affect the pace of work on our latest title in any way. The team working on Cyberpunk 2077 already has over 400 people.
For comparison, the largest the development team ever got on the gorgeous, massive The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was 250. So yeah… Cyberpunk is gonna be a pretty big game, I guess.
Set in the same universe as Mike Pondsmith’s classic pen & paper RPG system, Cyberpunk 2020, 2027 will be a massive open world title that blends FPS elements into a sprawling RPG, though it is absolutely an RPG first and a shooter second, according to the development team.
CD Project RED’s Quest Designer Patrick Mills told Official Xbox Magazine:
Well, it’s an RPG. It’s an RPG before it’s a shooter. And it’s really about making a character and inhabiting that character and living in this world and making choices from not just the point of view of that character but also of yourself. With The Witcher, you had Geralt, and Geralt had history. He had decades of books, games, comics and even a television series, with a new one on the way, and it was about guiding him through his story. But with this, we want it to be your story. So really, putting you in first person is the only way to do that.
Cyberpunk 2077 still doesn’t have a release date, but we do know that CD Projekt RED are “targeting” a current gen release, which is encouraging.
