ActivisionActivision has shared a few new details on the 2019 instalment of Call of Duty, which is being developed by Modern Warfare studio Infinity Ward.
During its quarterly earnings call, the publisher announced that the upcoming title will feature “an entirely new campaign”, something the last COD – Black Ops 4 – drew some criticism for lacking.
ActivisionIn addition to a campaign, we can also expect “a huge and expansive multiplayer world and some fun co-op gameplay.” That’s according to newly appointed Activision President Rob Kostich.
Interestingly, this is the first time since 2017 that Activision has officially confirmed the development of a new COD before any kind of actual reveal. I’d imagine because most of us just assume a new year means a new COD at this point.
While we’re still not certain what shape the Infinity Ward developed 2019 COD will take, the current thinking is that it’ll be a fourth entry in the Modern Warfare series.
Many fans believed it could turn out to be Ghosts 2 after Infinity Ward Comms Manager Ashton Williams took to Twitter to post a series of skull-based imagery, that recalled the 2013 COD, but Kotaku’s Jason Schreier – a man of impeccable connections – revealed that it definitely won’t be a sequel to Ghosts.
The idea that it might just be Modern Warfare was recently lent further credence by Robert Bowling, a former Creative Strategist at Infinity Ward.
He took to Twitter to first inform us all that we’ll never get a follow up to the divisive Sci-Fi trappings of Infinite Warfare, and also teased that the 2019 COD will be a modern shooter.
Whatever it is, Activision CFO Dennis Durkin did reveal that the company doesn’t expect it to outsell Black Ops 4, announcing that “Call of Duty units are down year-over-year in our outlook.”
Call of Duty titles tend to be unveiled around April/May, so we’ll no doubt hear something official on the 2019 release fairly soon.
