For years, vegans have felt left out when meat eating companions opt for a cheeky lunchtime Greggs round.
However, with more and more people expressing an interest in veganism, times they are a changing, and the beloved pasty proprietors have really stepped up to the plate, or indeed paper bag.
As many people attempt to change their meat intake accordingly for ‘Veganuary’, Greggs too have got into the spirit of things with a brand new vegan sausage roll.

At a reasonable £1 per roll, these comforting quorn-filled snacks will be available at 950 Greggs shops across the UK from January 3 onwards. Even non-vegans will surely be intrigued to give it a try?
This positive step forward follows a PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) petition which called upon the high street bakery chain to bake a vegan sausage roll.
The petition was signed by 20,000 people, reflecting an increased number of those who are now incorporating vegan products into their mealtimes.
As reported by The Grocer, director of vegan corporate projects at PETA, Dawn Carr, said:
More people than ever are clamouring for healthy vegan options from their favourite on-the-go eateries.
PETA is calling on Greggs to heed this growing demand, add a vegan sausage roll to the menu and watch the cruelty-free treats fly off the shelves.
In May 2018, Greggs’ very first savoury vegan item, The Mexican Bean Wrap, proved a hit; bagging Greggs a PETA Food Award on account of its fabulously fresh flavours.
Surely we can expect a similar tastiness from this latest offering?

With ’96 layers of light and crisp puff pastry’, this golden treat looks like a true tummy warmer. Perfect stodge for those dreary January lunch breaks.
Chief executive at Greggs, Roger Whiteside, said:
Like many food retailers we’ve seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products. We’ve been trying to develop a Vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now.
It’s not been easy but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we’ve decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary.
Many sausage enthusiasts have praised Greggs for bringing more variety to their stores, ensuring their diverse range of customers have plenty of choice.
One person applauded:
Well done @GreggsOfficial for recognising the immense and growing demand for convenient #vegan options. If this tastes as good as it looks I’m sure it will be really popular! [sic]
Another tweeted:
Thanks for finally making my family feel included by your company, now I can treat my son when we are out just like everyone else gets to and at a reasonable price.
Big thanks for this. I hope these appear at motorway services.

Now, peckish vegans will finally know the unique bliss of a belly full of Greggs while picking the final flakes of golden pastry from the bag. Mmm.
And for all those naysayers grumbling about how the original is best, the meaty sausage roll is still readily available to satisfy all your carnivorous needs.
Bon appetit!
