For a number of years, a group of fans were hard at work on creating HD remakes of the first three Mortal Kombat games. As these things often go, the project was ultimately shut down.
It’s a genuine shame, since Mortal Kombat HD Remix looked properly brilliant in the screenshots we’ve seen. Fortunately, DSOGaming reports that there is a playable prototype floating around online that you can download and check out for yourself.
If you’re interested, you can check out two prototypes. There’s one that was made in GameMaker that you can find here and the Unity Engine version is here.
Be aware that they are just prototypes, so they’re not exactly super polished experiences. Expect a number of glitches, the odd freeze, and naturally, a whole bunch of missing characters, stages, and features.
You can only play as Scorpion and Sub-zero in the GameMaker version, for example, while the Unity demo only has Sub Zero. Both prototypes have fatalities though, so they’re worth checking out for those alone to be honest.
While it is a real shame that we’ll never see the original Mortal Kombat properly realised in high definition glory, we do have Mortal Kombat 11 to look forward to next year. That promises to be the grimmest instalment yet, and might even have Spawn as a playable character.
