As any dog owner will know, parting your pooch from the bin can be a handful; particularly when there are tempting leftovers left in there for them to lick.
And it is unthinkable that a true pet lover would ever severely punish their furry best friend for this very doggy habit; going as far as to leave him at a shelter.
Sadly, this is the situation two-year-old dog Coby found himself in, after the very people who were supposed to love and care for him dumped him at South Carolina’s Fairfield County Shelter.
Their reason for ditching sweet Coby was because they had grown tired of him rummaging about in the rubbish. A devastating punishment for a bafflingly small matter.
Footage of a traumatised Coby cowering at the shelter was shared online, leaving animal lovers in tears.
Fairfield County Shelter volunteer, Samira El-Hage, wrote on the Friends of Fairfield County SC Animal Shelter Facebook page about how frightened Coby has been when faced with his new surroundings:
He is scared out of his mind… almost like a feral dog would be… but not once did he growl, or try to bite,
He wanted to hide under the raised bed or run away when we got outside. He kept trying to chew the leash and would not look at us.
Samira added:
He just stands in that corner facing the wall.

Coby has now been moved to a temporary foster home in Dover, Delaware, where he is being cared for by kind-hearted foster mum Olivia Fritz.
Olivia told The Dodo:
Coby was so tucked into the seat that it was difficult for my husband to get him out,
Once he was out of the plane he went limp from fear… He was so shut down that really he did not respond to anything or anyone.
Olivia added:
My personal dogs have ALWAYS been trash diggers and we as a family have come up with creative ways to help with that behavior.
This is what a family should do when they own dogs — not dump them in a shelter. The entire story just broke my heart.

Sadly, it will take some time before poor Coby can learn to trust again, and his new friend Olivia is supporting him every step of the way.
According to The Dodo, Olivia said:
I thought if I just held him and kissed him that he would know he was loved… but it is far more than that.
I hope the damage he suffered can be overcome but it won’t be overnight.
Olivia continued:
He is super special to the rescue, and he will get nothing but the best home when he is ready!
Hopefully somebody kind and patient will find a permanent place in their heart for this precious boy soon.
