We’ve not even got to the end of 2018 and doom-mongers, seers and soothsayers are already predicting the end of the world in 2019.
This time it’s a ‘super blood moon’ on Sunday, January 20 that’s the harbinger of the end times.
You’ll forgive me for being sceptical but over the last 29 years I’ve lived through a fair few supposed apocalypses (Y2K was the highlight), and absolutely none of them have come to pass.
According to The Daily Star, this latest prediction comes courtesy of an American preacher by the name of Pastor Begley, who’s got form when it comes to predicting the apocalypse and being wrong (obviously).
Begley believes that a warning in the Bible prophesies this particular blood moon spells the end of mankind and the coming of the (Christian) Lord.
He cites the Book of Joel, specifically the passage 2:31, which reads:
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.
Apparently, the Book of Revelation also references a blood moon and the apocalypse as well, as if that means something.
Not quite sure how either of these passages proves that this specific blood moon is the prophesied sign of our destruction, but I didn’t get my religious studies GCSE.
Pastor Begley is adamant, however, saying this is definitely a sign of the end times and that America will play a key role in the end times. It’s weird how these American pastors always think America will have a big part to play in the apocalypse, isn’t it.
Begley claims the recent protests in Paris are proof he’s right and that the Lord will soon be with us, presumably because God loves Parisian architecture, hates seeing it on fire and hates the colour yellow.
Anyway moving on to something based in fact, the Blood Moon on January 20 will happen but it won’t be caused by anything supernatural.
The moon will briefly appear to turn red when the Earth passes between the Moon and the Sun casting a shadow on the lunar surface. Through the Earth’s atmosphere, this shadow will appear to turn the Moon red.
Sorry Pastor Begley but science has got this covered. Thanks science.
