Anne-Marie BojanDogs embody so many of the qualities we as humans admire on the deepest level, loyalty, bravery and kindness.
Time and time again, these beautiful animals channel their profound emotional intelligence into some of the most important roles on Earth: rescuer, therapist, best friend.
My own dog Laursen (as pictured above), has nuzzled up beside me during many a heartbreak or disappointment, while encouraging me to get out in nature on mornings when I would have otherwise hidden away from the rest of the world.
It’s no exaggeration to say dogs can change – and in some cases – save lives. Therefore, a documentary series delving into their stories will no doubt resonate with dog lovers the world over.
Dogs is a new documentary series on Netflix (where have you been), which tells six emotionally charged stories across six episodes. I mean, did you just watch that trailer – I’m in bits here. This is why I can’t watch programmes about animals!
The first episode followed the story of 11-year-old Corinne who suffers from seizures, and her bond with Rory – a dog who’s been specially trained to detect oncoming seizures.
According to a press release from Netflix, they said:
This episode highlights the depths of a closely formed friendship between a child and their dog, the unbreakable trust they have in each other and the incredible power of a dog’s ability to assist humans in health and wellness.
However, the second episode follows one man’s journey to rescue his dog, Zeus, from war-torn Syria. Tissues at the ready people!
Ayham is a Syrian refugee who’s managed to flee his homeland, settling in Germany. Yet Ayham had to leave his dog, Zeus, behind, which, to be honest, I can’t even imagine how heartbreaking that would have been for them both!
Luckily, Ayham has some amazing friends, who were back home looking after Zeus for him, while he investigated how he can get his beloved pooch into the country.
At one point, Ayham’s friend, Naji, even says to him:
I want to be a dog and come to you. They will put me in a cage, and I’ll come to you.

Thankfully, Ayham, Zeus (and us), get a happy ending as the pair are finally reunited after spending years apart (check out the video above).

The series has been developed by Glen Zipper and Amy Berg, and each episode has been directed by a renowned documentarian, including Heidi Ewing (One of Us) and Richard Hankin (The Jinx).
The series features stories from all over the world, from rescue dogs in Costa Rica, to the world of competitive dog groomers in Japan and California.
Berg told Variety:
In times of division, volatility and confusion ‘Dogs’ is an emotional palate cleanse. Watching the show offers a salve for the spirit and reminds us of the redemptive power of love.
