Spotify And Netflix Could Be Blocked For UK Citizens In EU After Brexit

Netflix announces June additions

In a move that feels like nothing more than a ‘kick us when we’re down’ dig, streaming services could be blocked to British citizens on holiday in Europe, if the UK leaves the EU.
The government has admitted that, if a no-deal Brexit goes ahead, UK citizens out and about in the EU might not be able to access their favourite streaming services like Netflix and Spotify, meaning they’ll have to find another way to drown out the cries of anguish and despair.
Currently, everyone in the EU enjoys ‘geo-blocking’, which ensures streaming services do not discriminate when someone is in their country or travelling around Europe. Your Spotify faves remain the same no matter what European country you’re in, in other words.
However, thanks to the arrogance of some politicians who believe the UK will be better off outside the EU even without a plan, the ‘geo-blocking’ regulation could well be gone – along with a lot of other things – if Brexit goes ahead.
Papers recently released by the government state, as per Independent:
Following repeal of the Geo-Blocking Regulation in the UK, traders from the UK, EU and third countries would not be prohibited from discriminating between EU customers and UK customers.
For instance a UK trader would be able to offer different terms to a UK customer compared to a French customer.
The new rules mean companies based in the UK but selling services and products in the EU will also have to adhere to the regulation, to make sure they don’t discriminate between people in different countries throughout Europe.
The new geo-blocking rules are set to come into effect in December 2018.
