A Chinese multi-millionaire has said he lives on around $100 a month and plans to give his entire fortune to charity when he dies.Movie legend Chow Yun-fat, known for his various roles in films including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Bulletproof Monk and Crazy Rich Asians, recently revealed his frugal lifestyle while promoting his new film, Project Gutenberg.
The 63-year-old actor said he rarely buys new things, eats at street food stalls and takes public transport as much as he can. Chow also revealed he’d used the same Nokia flip phone for the past 17 years, and only recently upgraded to a smartphone when his old phone stopped working.
Chow also spoke about his choice of clothes, saying he prefers to shop at discount stores and only wears what he finds comfortable, such as his 98 yuan ($14 USD) shirt and 15 yuan ($2 USD) sandals.
Speaking to Hong Kong movie site Jayne Stars, the actor said:
I don’t wear clothes for other people. As long as I think it’s comfortable, then it’s good enough for me.He added:
My dream is to be a happy and normal person. The hardest thing in life is not about how much money you earn, but how to keep a peaceful mindset and live the rest of your life in a simple and carefree manner. The actor is reportedly worth a whopping $5.6 billion HKD ($714 million USD) having been in the industry for over 40 years. As he and his wife Jasmine Tan have no children, they plan on leaving it all to charity. The couple also established their own charity several years ago, and do charity work in their spare time.
Chow has stated:
The money’s not mine. I’m only keeping it safe for the time being. If you have a story you want to tell send it to UNILAD via stories@unilad.co.uk
