James Bond Will Never Be Played By A Woman, Says Producer

James Bond will never be a woman.Sony Pictures Releasing

With Daniel Craig leaving the much coveted position of James Bond behind, another successor will soon rise to take his place.
Speculation has of course run rampant as to who this suave, martini sipping individual will be. Favourites to replace Craig have included Idris Elba, James Norton and Tom Hardy; all of whom would look at home in a tux.
Some have even suggested shaking up the franchise by casting a woman in the role. Actors Charlize Theron, Claire Foy and Margot Robbie have previously been discussed as options by fans of the spy thriller series.
However, anyone hoping for a ‘Jane Bond’ will be disappointed to learn that this would be a very unlikely possibility.

Speaking with The Guardian, executive producer Barbara Broccoli confirmed there were no plans to introduce a female James Bond:
Bond is male, He’s a male character. He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as a male.
And that’s fine. We don’t have to turn male characters into women. Let’s just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters.
However, 58-year-old Broccoli said she would be happy for a female screenwriter or director to be hired for the next film.
Although Broccoli admitted James Bond couldn’t be considered a feminist series, she noted how there had been positive steps made in how female characters are portrayed within the newer films:
But look at the way the world has changed. And I think Bond has come through and transformed with the times. I’ve tried to do my part, and I think particularly with the Daniel [Craig] films, they’ve become much more current in terms of the way women are viewed.
Speaking with Variety back in January 2018, Idris Elba reflected on the potential for a female Bond:
Are we interested in having a Bond character other than being a male?
It could be a woman, could be a black woman, could be a white woman, but I think, that character, everybody would like to see it have — do something different with it, why not?
The character of Bond has gone through various transformations over the years, with each new actor bringing something different to the 007 persona and mythology. However, many fans feel changing Bond’s gender would be a step too far.
One exasperated person grumbled:
Some characters have to be men, some have to be women – there’s nothing nefarious about it, that’s just the way the character is written!!
Another pondered:
This got me thinking about some great female characters in the Bond universe who deserve their own movie. Pussy Galore? Tracy? Octopussy? May Day? Camille from Quantum?
Throughout his long and fast paced career, Bond has encountered plenty of men and women just as smooth talking and resourceful as himself.
Expanding the Bond universe Marvel style to delve into the stories of such under explored characters could prove to be very interesting indeed.
James Bond 25 will speed into UK cinemas as of February 14, 2020.
