If you’ve been playing Red Dead Redemption 2 over the past few days, you’ve probably noticed that the game is really, really damn big.
Obviously, I’d recommend exploring the world on foot or by horse as much as possible, because there’s so much to see and do that you’re bound to miss things if you just fast travel everywhere.
In fact, a ton of people – myself included – spent the first few hours of gameplay assuming that fast travel wasn’t even an option and that Rockstar had decided to leave out the feature for the sake of immersion.
Rockstar GamesWith that said, I appreciate some of you lead busy lives, and you want to get as far into the game’s 60 hour campaign as quickly as possible – so here’s how you can in fact get around Red Dead Redemption 2 with ease.
Fast travel in this game isn’t as simple as opening your map and selecting a town or other point of interest. Instead, you have to unlock the feature through your ledger. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to fast travel from your camp.
As you may be aware by now, your camp ledger offers plenty of different ways to pimp out your camp (for money), so that you can live your best Western life.
You’ll eventually come across an option to upgrade Dutch’s lodgings for $200. The upgrade after that, for a princely $300+ will attach a fast travel map to the back of Arthur’s tent.
Rockstar GamesIt’s a fairly expensive upgrade. With everything you need to do before you can access it, plus the fast travel upgrade itself, you’re looking at around $600, so get saving/robbing now.
Once you finally have it, it’s important to remember that you can only fast travel from your camp, and there’s no way to fast travel back to camp – as such, you’re gonna have to ride back to camp every time you want to fast travel somewhere, which is probably more trouble than it’s worth most of the time.
Oh, and you can only fast travel to locations you’ve already visited (obviously), and you need to make sure your horse is nearby before you fast travel, or else the game won’t let you.
So yeah, fast travel does exist in Red Dead Redemption 2. It’s just a pain in the arse and (probably) purposefully as obscure and difficult to use as possible. Happy trails.
