Fallout 76 developer Bethesda refuses to rule out the possibility of cross-play between PS4, Xbox One and PC users, admitting that it could be on the cards further down the line.
During a recent interview at the Fallout 76 Greenbrier event in West Virginia, Bethesda’s Emil Pagliarulo and Chris Mayer said that they originally had no plans to include cross-play as an option in the game, due to Sony’s lack of clarity over whether or not it would be possible.

When asked if cross-play will indeed be an option, Pagliarulo said:
Not at launch. Before, Sony had told us no when we enquired about it. In the future, maybe. It’s technically feasible.Mayer added:
Yeah that’s a funny question now because Sony have opened the door to allow cross-play where a month ago it wasn’t a possibility. It’s not something we had planned for and not something we can just switch on but maybe in the future.Sony recently announced that a beta trial period for cross-play would be trialled on Fortnite, but made no promises that the option would be unlocked in full on future titles.
This comes after Sony took a firm stance against cross-play on its third party titles despite growing pressure within the gaming industry to allow owners of different platforms to play together.

When pressed to see if they knew about Sony’s change of heart on the situation, Mayer admitted “[we] didn’t hear it until you heard it.”
Fallout 76 will rely heavily on its multiplayer and shared experience, though insist the game is fully soloable, and you don’t need to play with others to get everything from the game.
In the same interview, Fallout 76’s Project Leader Jeff Gardner said:
You can play it solo and it’s a really great experience… A lot of the story stuff, I don’t want to say it’s better if you solo it but you have the time to play it at your own pace, listen to the holotapes, read the monitors and stuff. It’s very soloable.
