There comes a time in most people’s lives when they think about packing it all in and just taking off somewhere, to cut all ties and travel, living a life of freedom and solitude.
For some people, the feeling washes over them as they drag themselves to work on a Monday morning, or they arrive back after a holiday that’s just never long enough. For me, it happens pretty much every time I go on Instagram.
While we all have escapist flights of fancy, not many of us will take the plunge and completely overhaul our lives to follow through with it.
However, one couple from Nottingham have done just that. Proving you don’t need the lifestyles of the rich and famous to realise your goals, they’ve created their dream home on the back of a lorry, meaning they can up sticks and move on whenever they damn well please.
Martin Hill, 38, and Iona Stewart, 27, bought a five-tonne lorry for just £3,600 on eBay, and spent £20,000 decking it out to make it liveable. Although it’s not just liveable – it’s darn luxurious.
The pair met while doing a season in the French Alps, which they do every winter to snowboard. Yet now, with their lorry, they can continue their travels whenever they feel like it, and have no plans to settle down any time soon.
Initially just using the lorry as accommodation while they snowboarded in the Alps, the pair now plan to use it ‘full-time’ as Martin has sold his house and bar in Nottingham.

Martin said:
About four years ago after a few too many beers I thought about buying a big American RV.
We bought the lorry in May this year. We spent four months working on it full-time. We are really lucky to not have to work and we did everything ourselves.
It’s amazing what you can do. We are not exactly slumming it.
The former landlord said he did most of the labouring while Iona, a chef from Scotland, designed the layout and design for the interior. After buying the lorry on eBay, the couple spent £20,000 on renovating the 28 feet box.
Sharing their work and the transformation the lorry has undergone, the couple have built up quite a following with their new, adventurous endeavour.

As the photos show, they’ve created a split floor kitchen complete with a cooker, hob, fridge and sink. As well as a cosy living area, complete with a wood burning stove, a double bedroom and bathroom, with cleverly designed storage units, windows and ceiling lights.
And the best part, of course, is Martin and Iona can simply drive on to their next destination whenever they decide to.
Although many people enjoy the freedom of camper vans and caravans while on holiday, this massive lorry takes the whole idea of a mobile home to the next level, especially when you consider the couple did everything themselves.
